Adult Basic Education/One-on-one Tutoring: This volunteer program pairs adults in the community who would like to strengthen their literacy skills with trained tutors who work one-on-one. Tutoring is learner-based and may include a variety of subject areas (ie: reading comprehension, writing, math, employability skills, etc.) Many one-on-one tutors will find that their adult learners have low literacy skills. Occasionally, CLC will have higher level adult learners who want specialized attention in a specific subject area or pre-GED individualized instruction. The CLC Staff will pair adult learners with volunteer tutors based on many factors (ie: availability, area of study, etc.). They will work with each tutor on curriculum recommendations and will follow the monthly progress of each adult learner throughout their enrollment at CLC. Educational materials and tutor resources will be provided by CLC.
Employability Program: Every adult learner at Culpeper Literacy Council has the opportunity to participate in our Employability Program.
The goal of CLC’s Employability Program is to help adult learners strengthen the skills needed in our ever-changing workforce. Resumes, cover letters, job applications, interviews and job search techniques are all areas that receive focus. Although CLC is not a career placement center, we hope to equip our adult learners with the necessary employability skills they will need in the community and for their future. A computer lab with printers and copier is available for student use. Our computers are equipped with Microsoft Office and are networked for internet use. Students have the freedom to work on their own during office hours.
Becoming a Volunteer Tutor:
Tutors are needed in all basic education and GED subjects including: reading, writing, science, social studies and math. Tutors who are interested in working with our ESOL students (English for Speakers of Other Languages) are also needed. New Tutor Training Sessions are offered twice a year (Spring and Fall), so please call us to reserve a spot at our next session.
Whether you can only give an hour or are interested in working with multiple students each week, we need you. To find out more about becoming a CLC tutor or to help with an upcoming fundraiser, please contact the office at: (540) 825.5804 or email: info@culpeperliteracy.org.
