ESOL Program Overview: CLC provides free classes for students who wish to learn English. Our ESOL classes are as diverse as the students we serve. Classes are offered throughout the week at various times to accommodate our adult learners’ schedules. Please see below for class descriptions and visit the "Class Schedule" page for a complete listing of all ESOL classes offered.
In addition, adult learners who wish to obtain US Citizenship will be matched with one of our ESOL/EL/CIVICS specialists. These one-on-one sessions will concentrate on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, US naturalization procedures, civic participation, US history and government, and life skills. Every ESOL adult learner at Culpeper Literacy Council also has the opportunity to participate in our Employability Program. The goal of CLC’s Employability Program is to help adult learners strengthen the skills needed in our ever-changing workforce. Resumes, cover letters, job applications, interviews and job search techniques are all areas that receive focus. Although CLC is not a career placement center, we hope to equip our adult learners with the necessary employability skills they will need in the community and for their future. A computer lab with printers and copier is available for student use. Our computers are equipped with Microsoft Office and are networked for internet use. Students have the freedom to work on their own during office hours.
Rosetta Stone Class:
Culpeper
Literacy Council’s Rosetta Stone Classes offer computer-assisted learning
following the Rosetta Stone Program. Classes contain a variety of levels
(Rosetta Stone Levels 1-3) serving the needs of beginners, intermediates and
advanced-level English speakers.
Students progress at a self-guided pace and are assisted by instructors
who help with pronunciation, meaning, vocabulary and context. Additional learning activities and
educational resources are utilized within the class.
Practical English:
This informal and interactive class has a main focus of conversational English. Role playing games, music and media are all utilized in order to help students feel more comfortable speaking English in everyday situations.
English Immersion (aka: Fridays with Frank):
The English Immersion class (aka: Fridays with Frank) uses a variety of methods to build a
strong foundation in the English language. Listening exercises, grammar review, writing, pronunciation and vocabulary building are all covered in this dynamic class.
Authentic texts are used (ie: newspaper, menu items, medicine labels, and maps) in addition to educational materials from the CLC library. Technology resources are also incorporated making “Fridays with Frank” a comprehensive class for adult learners. Applied ESOL:
The Applied ESOL class offers a pragmatic approach to the learning of a new language. It builds upon a student's natural language ability in order to develop proficiency in English. Classes are hands-on with students engaging in activities that foster language development in context. The language processes, listening, speaking, reading and writing are integrated around topics of mutual interest. Emphasis is on skill development for real life applications such as reading for information and pleasure, writing for personal needs, speaking for clear and correct communication, and listening for cues to meaning.
Computer assisted learning with the Rosetta Stone program reinforces other learning through guided practice and immediate feedback. An on-line typing program and daily news headlines and weather predictions add to content variety. The word processor helps students develop confidence with technology and improve writing skills.
New students may join a class at the beginning of each month.
CE (Conversational English):
The Culpeper Literacy Council’s “Conversational
English” classes provide a comfortable and non-threatening environment in which
students can strengthen the skills they have in reading and speaking the
English language. The class is comprised of students who are at various levels
in the English-learning process. Some students who are enrolled in other ESOL
classes use the “Conversational English” (CE) class as a great supplement to
their continued study.
In Friday’s CE class, newspaper articles and books
such as “Grammar in Context” are used and discussed. Since many students are
learning the basics of the English language, elementary grammar is an important
foundational element of this class. In
Saturday’s CE class, students often share news or discuss current events with
the group, practicing writing key points on the board as they are spoken. The class works together to correct what has
been written on the board. In both classes, discussion is encouraged and
facilitated on a variety of topics.
Additionally, English pronunciation, nouns, verbs, numbers, etc. are all
brought into the discussion. On both
Friday and Saturday a portion of each class is devoted to
vocabulary-building.
Class participation, collaboration and every-day
application are all important parts of the Conversational English classes at
Culpeper Literacy Council. CE students can practice reading and speaking
English in a fun and safe environment all while building community with fellow
adult learners.
